Drain Cleaning
Drain cleaning means running a cable machine, sized to the pipe, through a single branch drain until the head breaks up and pulls back whatever is narrowing it.

Standing in ankle-deep water halfway through a shower means hair and soap have matted together below the strainer. We pull the stopper, clear the trap and branch, and leave the tub draining freely.

Tub and shower drain cleaning removes the hair, soap scum and conditioner residue that build up around the stopper linkage, in the trap and along the short branch line. We take out the stopper or strainer, clear the trap with a small cable, and flush. You need it when water pools during a shower, drains in slow circles, or smells musty.
Bathing drains collect a very particular kind of clog. Each shower rinses a few hairs down the opening, and soap, conditioner and body oils coat them into a soft, rope-like strand. The strand snags on the crossbar of the strainer or the linkage of a tub stopper and gathers more hair every day until the opening is nearly closed.
Tub drains in older Salem houses add their own wrinkle. Many cast-iron tubs from the 1920s to 1950s have a trip-lever stopper with a plunger and linkage that hangs inside the overflow pipe, which is a perfect hair trap. We know those assemblies well and can clear them without damaging the old finish.
Hair alone is slippery, but bar soap reacts with minerals and leaves a sticky scum that binds strands together. Conditioner and oil-based products make it worse by leaving a waxy film on the pipe that the mat can cling to.
The mat usually starts within the first few inches of the opening, around the strainer crossbar or the stopper body. Once it is thick enough, it acts like a filter and catches even small bits of skin and lint, so the drain goes from slightly slow to nearly stopped within a few weeks.
Each stopper style needs a slightly different approach. Pulling the stopper often removes most of the clog by itself, and it lets the cable reach the trap without catching on moving parts that could bend or break inside an old tub's drain shoe.

After the stopper is out, we run a small-diameter cable through the drain body and down into the trap. A short bulb head grabs hair instead of cutting it into pieces that would wash farther downstream. We protect the enamel or acrylic around the opening so the cable never scratches the surface.
In crawlspace homes we sometimes reach the tub trap from below, which can be faster when the trap is old cast iron packed with years of buildup. If the trap itself is badly corroded, we point it out so you can decide whether to replace it.
A tub or shower drain that has just been cleaned will stay open much longer with a little upkeep. Most of it takes less than a minute a week and costs very little, and it saves you from another round of standing water.
Warning signs
On the visit
We lay a padded mat in the tub and tape the area around the drain to protect old enamel and acrylic.
The stopper or strainer comes out, along with any trip-lever linkage, and we clean the hair off by hand.
A small bulb head goes through the drain body into the trap and pulls the remaining hair mat back out.
Hot water runs wide open through the drain, then we reinstall and adjust the stopper so it seals and opens properly.
We fill the tub partway and drain it to confirm a fast drain and a dry overflow gasket.

Slow bathing drains are a steady call in 1920s to 1950s Highland, Grant and Northeast Salem homes, where cast-iron tubs keep their original trip-lever stoppers and scaled iron traps under the floor.

A musty smell from a shower drain usually comes from soap film and hair decaying in the trap and on the pipe walls just below the strainer, even before the drain slows. A dry trap in a seldom-used shower can also let sewer gas in. Cleaning the drain and running water weekly in spare showers usually ends it.
Often, yes. A trip-lever stopper that will not hold a bath is usually out of adjustment or tangled with hair along its linkage. When we pull it to clean the drain, we clean the plunger and adjust the rod so it seals properly. If the linkage is corroded or the gasket is worn, we can replace those parts on the same visit.
They make a big difference. Most tub and shower clogs are hair, and a fine mesh catcher stops nearly all of it before it reaches the stopper or trap. The catch is emptying it after each shower. A catcher left full becomes a clog of its own sitting on top of the drain.
The tub and bathroom sink usually have separate traps and short branch lines before they join, so a hair mat in the tub drain does not affect the sink. If both were slow together, we would look farther down at the shared line. A tub that is slow on its own almost always has a clog within the first couple of feet.
Mostly. A shower has no overflow or trip-lever linkage, so we remove the strainer, often held by screws or a snap ring, and run the cable straight down into the trap. Tiled showers can have a clamping drain body, and we take care not to disturb the seal between the drain and the shower pan while we work.
