Quick answer

Drain cleaning means running a cable machine, sized to the pipe, through a single branch drain until the head breaks up and pulls back whatever is narrowing it. You need it when one fixture drains slowly or stops while the rest of the house works normally. If several fixtures back up together, the trouble usually sits farther down, in the main sewer line.

Every branch drain in a house slopes gently toward the main stack, and anything that sticks to the pipe wall starts catching the next thing that floats by. Hair wraps around a burr, soap scum binds it, and within months a two-inch line can shrink to a pencil-width channel. Plungers and store gels move the water a little but rarely remove the mat causing the slowdown.

Our plumber starts by working out which drain is actually blocked and roughly where, because a slow bathroom sink and a slow laundry standpipe are different jobs. In most Salem homes the drain lines run through the crawlspace, which gives us access to cleanouts and lets us check for sagging pipe or loose hangers while we are under the house.

What a cable machine head does inside a branch line

A drain machine spins a flexible steel cable inside the pipe, and the head on the end does the real work. A spiral bulb head hooks hair and drags it back out. A spade or cutter head shears packed soap and grease off the wall. A retrieval head grabs solid objects like a bottle cap or a small toy that a cutter would only push deeper.

We feed the cable slowly and feel for the change in resistance where the blockage sits. Once the head breaks through, we work it back and forth a few times to scrape the wall clean, because a head that only punches a small hole leaves most of the clog in place to catch the next load.

Why one slow drain is different from a house-wide backup

If only the bathroom sink is slow, the blockage almost always lives in the trap or the first few feet of branch line behind the wall. When the toilet bubbles while the washer drains, or water rises in the tub after a flush, the restriction is downstream where those branches join. That points to the main line and a bigger machine run from a cleanout.

  • One fixture slow, others normal: usually a clog in that branch drain
  • Two fixtures on the same wall slow: a shared branch line
  • Every drain slow or gurgling at once: the main sewer line
  • Water rising in the lowest fixture in the house: call right away

Older pipe materials under Salem floors

Houses in Grant, Highland and Northeast Salem built before the 1940s often still have cast-iron drains under the floor. Cast iron rusts from the inside, and that rough scale grabs debris far faster than smooth plastic. We run a smaller, gentler head through old iron so the line gets cleaned without chewing at a thinned wall.

Postwar homes from the 1950s to 1970s may mix galvanized steel drain arms with later ABS repairs. Every joint between two materials leaves a small lip that catches hair and grease, so those transitions are often exactly where we find the clog.

Habits that keep a cleared drain open longer

Once a line is open, a few small habits slow the next buildup a great deal. Most of it comes down to keeping hair, fats and solids out of pipes that were never sized to carry them in the first place.

  • Set a fine mesh catcher over tub and shower drains
  • Wipe greasy pans with a paper towel before washing them
  • Run hot water for a minute after the last dish
  • Put coffee grounds and eggshells in the trash or compost bin
  • Skip harsh chemical openers, which can soften old trap seals and fittings

Warning signs

When a branch drain needs a cable

  • Water stands after useThe sink or tub still holds water several minutes after you turn the faucet off.
  • Gurgling from the openingAir bubbling back up the drain means water is squeezing past a partial blockage.
  • Sour smell from one fixtureTrapped soap, hair and food decay inside the line and push an odor back into the room.
  • Plunging only works brieflyThe drain opens after plunging but slows down again within a few days or a week.
  • Slow drain after remodelingGrout, thinset or drywall dust washed down a new fixture can settle in the trap and harden.
  • Neighboring fixture water risesWater creeps up in one sink while another fixture on the same wall is draining.

On the visit

What happens when we come out for drain cleaning

  1. 01

    Find the blocked branch

We run water at nearby fixtures to see which drains share the problem and where the restriction most likely sits.

  2. 02

    Protect the work area

Drop cloths go down around the fixture and under the trap, then we open a cleanout or pull the trap for access.

  3. 03

    Run the right head

We choose a bulb, spade or cutter head for the pipe size and clog type, then feed the cable until it breaks through.

  4. 04

    Flush and test flow

Hot water runs through the line at full volume while we watch for slowing, gurgling or drips at the trap joints.

  5. 05

    Explain what we found

We show you what came out of the pipe, tell you what caused it, and point out any pipe damage we noticed.

Typical Salem prices

What is includedTypical range
Single drain cleared with a cable machine$149 to $289
Second drain cleared on the same visit$89 to $149
Corroded trap or drain arm swapped while we are there$74 to $139

Expect a price in this band for a typical Salem branch drain, not a fixed promise. The plumber checks how the line is reached and quotes the final number before the cable goes in.

Questions

Drain Cleaning: what Salem homeowners ask

How do I know my drain cleaning needs a cable machine and not a plunger?

A plunger can push a soft clog along, but it cannot remove hair bound with soap that is stuck to the pipe wall. If the drain keeps slowing down again after plunging, or the blockage is past the trap, a cable machine is the right tool. It cuts and pulls the material out instead of moving it a few feet farther down.

Can drain cleaning damage old cast-iron pipe?

It can if someone forces an oversized cutter through a thin, rusted line. We match the head and cable to the pipe and run it at a controlled speed, especially in pre-1940s houses. If the cable shows heavy scale or the pipe sounds hollow, we tell you, because a cast-iron drain near the end of its life is worth knowing about.

Why does my bathroom sink drain clog again so soon after cleaning?

The usual culprit is the pop-up stopper. Its pivot rod crosses the drain right below the basin, and hair wraps around it every time you brush or wash. Pulling and cleaning the stopper every few months stops most repeat clogs. If the line itself is rough or sagging, we will show you where.

Is drain cleaning done through the fixture or through a cleanout?

It depends on where the clog sits. A blockage in a sink trap is easiest to reach by pulling the trap. Something farther down the branch is often cleaner to reach through a cleanout plug, which lets the cable travel straight without fighting the tight bends inside a fixture. In crawlspace homes we often have both options.

Should I pour a chemical opener down before calling for drain cleaning?

We suggest skipping it. Caustic openers rarely dissolve a full hair clog, and the pipe is then full of harsh liquid when the plumber opens the trap. They can also attack older fittings and rubber seals. If you already used one, just tell us when you call so we can protect our hands, eyes and your floor.
