When gutters overflow, downspouts back up at the ground, or water pools against the foundation in a heavy rain, the buried line that carries roof water away is usually choked with silt and leaves.

Storm drain cleaning clears the underground pipes that carry rainwater from downspouts, yard drains and sometimes foundation drains away from the house. We cable or jet the lines to remove silt, packed leaves, shingle grit and roots, then flush them. You need it when downspouts overflow at the ground connection, water pools near the foundation, or the crawlspace gets wet during long rains.
A storm line is a separate pipe from your sewer. It takes roof water from the downspouts and carries it to the street, a ditch or a dry well, and in Salem it works hardest from October through May. Because it only carries rain, nobody notices it is failing until the first big storm of the season sends water spilling out at the base of the downspout.
Storm lines clog differently than sewer lines. Instead of grease and paper, they fill with fine silt, roof grit, fir needles, maple leaves and moss that slide off the roof. Many older lines are thin-walled or perforated pipe that settles and lets soil in. We clear them and show you where the trouble sits.
Every rain washes grit from roofing, soil from gutters and bits of leaves into the downspouts. In a heavy storm the water moves fast and carries that debris along, but as the flow slows at the end of a rain, the heavier material settles in low spots and bends of the buried pipe.
Over a dry Salem summer, that wet sediment packs down and hardens. Roots sense the moisture left in the line and work into joints, and the next fall the first storm finds a pipe that is already half full of compacted silt.
The type of pipe in your yard changes how we clean it and how well it holds up. We identify the pipe at the downspout connection before choosing the tool, since some older flexible pipe tears if it is handled too roughly.

Because storm lines mostly fill with loose silt rather than a single solid clog, water jetting usually does a better job than a cable. The jet washes the sediment out along the whole length and leaves the pipe clean enough to carry a winter storm.
Cabling still has a place when roots have grown into a joint or a mass of packed leaves forms a solid plug. In those cases we cut through the obstruction first, then follow with jetting to carry the loosened debris away instead of leaving it in the line.
During a long Salem rain, the ground around the house fills with water and the groundwater rises. A blocked downspout line dumps roof water right at the foundation on top of that, and the extra water often finds its way into the crawlspace.
Clearing the storm line keeps roof water moving away from the house, which lightens the load on any foundation drain and sump pump. We often find that a wet crawlspace improves noticeably once the downspout lines are clear and flowing again.
Warning signs
On the visit
We find each downspout connection and trace where the buried lines run and where they come out.
At an opening we identify corrugated, perforated or rigid pipe so we can pick a tool it will handle.
Silt-filled lines get jetted from the downspout end, while root or leaf plugs get cut with a cable first.
We run water through each line and confirm it comes out strong at the curb, ditch or dry well.
If a section is crushed or full of roots, we show you where on camera and talk through the fix.
| What is included | Typical range |
|---|---|
| Storm drain and downspout lines cleared | $249 to $529 |
| Additional downspout line on the same visit | $79 to $149 |
| Camera look at a crushed or root-filled section | $169 to $279 |
The number of downspout lines and the kind of pipe in your yard set where the job falls. We trace the lines first, then give you a firm price before jetting or cabling.
Around Salem
Storm line calls peak in the West Salem and South Salem hills, where fir and maple debris fills gutters, and in older central neighborhoods whose aging tile drains silt up during long winter rains.

In most Salem homes, roof and yard drains are separate from the sanitary sewer. They usually run to the street curb, a ditch or a dry well on the property. Some older houses have unusual connections, so if you are not sure where your downspouts go, we can trace the storm line and show you its outlet.
Homes under big trees, especially firs and maples that drop needles and leaves, often benefit from storm line cleaning every few years. Houses with open yards may go much longer. Clearing the lines in early fall, before the wet season really starts, gives you the best chance of getting through winter storms without overflows.
A hose can sometimes push out a light layer of leaves near the downspout, but it rarely moves packed silt or roots farther down. Forcing a lot of water into a blocked line can also push it out at a weak joint near the foundation. If the line still backs up after a hose flush, it needs jetting or cabling.
Usually because the pipe is perforated, cracked or separated at a joint, letting soil wash in with every rain. Corrugated pipe also traps silt in its ridges. Jetting clears it, but if soil keeps returning, replacing the damaged section with solid, smooth-wall pipe is the lasting fix, and a camera look shows where it is.
It can add to it. When a downspout line backs up, the roof water spills right at the foundation, and in a long Salem rain that soil is already saturated. That water often ends up in the crawlspace or the sump. Clearing the storm lines moves roof water away and takes a real share of the load off.
